Lismore Acupuncture and Natural Therapy Centre was established in 1992 by acupuncturists and Chinese Medicine practitioners Markus Goeldi and Valerie Cameron.
Markus and Valerie both have previous training in Western health and science. Markus as an industrial chemist and hospital nurse in accident and emergency, Valerie in pharmacological research in hospital and university. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the form of acupuncture and herbal medicine can contribute to the treatment of many illnesses and traumatic injuries by helping reduce the incidence of invasive procedures and assist in the treatment of side effects of pharmacological drugs. Markus and Valerie studied TCM to understand how modern medicine practice can be broadened to incorporate TCM as a beneficial therapy for patients with varied health concerns.
The clinic treats patients using a variety of therapies including Acupuncture, Laser Therapy, Oriental Cupping and Massage, Chinese Herbs, Western Herbs, Homeopathy, Dietary and Lifestyle Advice. These therapies can effectively treat patients with a spectrum of conditions from minor complaints to serious chronic illness.
Markus has practised acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine since 1974 and has had practices in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Lithgow. His interest in health and science began years ago when he studied chemistry. Initially he worked in research, then studied nursing and worked in accident and emergency departments in hospitals in Switzerland. His Chinese medicine experience over more than 40 years has been supported by comprehensive study of the great body of knowledge of TCM practice of the Shan Han Lun and Wen Bing Schools. He admires the work of scholars such as Dr Greta Young and her Chinese Pearls seminars, Master Tung’s acupuncture, Dr John F Shen and J D Van Buren. Markus’s reputation in effective treatment of illness and trauma extends into the general medical community as well as the Chinese medicine community.
Valerie Cameron gained experience in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Guandong Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. She has an Advanced Certificate in supervised clinical practice from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Valerie has an interest in research in China and this has led her to completing a Masters degree in acupuncture and she is now in her final year of a Masters of Chinese Herbal Medicine. In the early 1980s her experience as a research assistant in Pharmacology at the University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital stimulated an interest in understanding how scientific knowledge is formed and how evidence-based medicine research can incorporate ideas such as Chinese medicine into generally accepted health practice. Valerie also specialises in Chinese tuina massage and dietary medicine.
Practice manager Vicki Famularo joined the Centre in 2011 and maintains the extensive herbal dispensary, carries out the administration of the practice and responds promptly to patient needs.
